Project in progress: Website Optimisation in the agricultural tyre industry.

DS Factors, a family-run company based in Spalding in Lincolnshire that deals in agricultural tyres and tractor wheels, approached Babel Interactive with the aim to improve their natural search listings across all the major search engines for the company website www.dsfactors.co.uk.

The first stage was to conduct a thorough analysis of the website and see how well it ranked before the optimisation firm had even started. ‘DS Factors was keen to be seen under the keywords of agricultural tyres and agricultural wheels’ said Babel marketing manager Tom Church. ‘After our initial research we found that they were not ranking at all – not a single one of the major search engines had picked them up.’

The first stage of the business was therefore to submit the various directories. Within a fortnight it was being picked up on Google, though it hadn’t yet been indexed by the search engines automated spider software. ‘We had the client confirm our actions as we proceeded, demonstrating to them through each step of the way exactly what we were doing and what the effects were’ said Church. ‘It’s important in a project of this kind when you may not see any results for possibly weeks – maybe months. Alas it is a game where absolute patience is called for.’

Babel Interactive took a two-staged management to the optimisation of DS Factors: before making any changes to the client’s site they set out to attempt the optimisation externally. ‘A client such as DS Factors specialising in agricultural tyres and tractor wheels doesn’t have either the skill-set or the time to indulge in tweaking their website – therefore we decided it would be best for all concerned if we set out from an external point of view; encouraging quality links, submitting to the most important directories, and encouraging online PR’ continued Church. ‘We submitted DS Factors to industry directories which dealt in the agricultural tyre and tractor business in order to build up links and brand presence online, and we included a link from our own site direct to theirs to ensure that when the Google spiders next indexed our site, DS Factors would be picked up and indexed as well.’

‘Currently the project is looking good’ added Church. ‘You have to remember we have only just begun within the last three weeks – optimisation frequently takes months to be properly realised, and after-service care is also important to stop you from sliding back down the ranks once you’ve got anywhere near the top.’

So what is the next step to get DS Factors appearing under the terms agricultural tyres and agricultural wheels? ‘We have yet to start touching their site’ concluded Church. ‘With our optimisation programmes we are reluctant to take full control of a client’s website – we prefer to act as a consultancy and recommend changes, outlining why we believe our ideas will work so that the client becomes fully involved in the partnership. That is the next step.’
